Debbie Yones, M.S., CCC-SLP

In 2013, Debbie Yones designed and opened a private-practice that places the client's interests at the center of all decisions. She follows the Life-Participation Approach to Aphasia, which defines values and standards for achieving short and long-term goals, and re-engaging in life. Her practice delivers personalized, intensive aphasia therapy incorporating in-office individual therapy, group therapy, and community-based tasks and activities personalized to her client’s life goals. Debbie has presented on the topics of life-participation and developing a patient-centered practice at state and national conventions with Dr. Jackie Hinckley.

Debbie’s career did not begin in speech pathology.  She spent more than 15 years in the corporate world, but felt a desire to help people on a more personal level.  She started volunteering at La Rabida Children's Hospital in Chicago and fell in love! During those visits, she noticed the impact the speech therapists had on the children and decided to follow in their footsteps.

During graduate school, she developed an interest in stuttering and neurological issues impacting speech and language (due to stroke, ALS, and traumatic brain injury).  Although all facets of speech therapy take great compassion and skill, she found these two areas required a similar balance of interpersonal connections and knowledge of the best treatment approaches for each individual.

Debbie honored to sit on the Executive Board of Directors of Voices of Hope for Aphasia, a non-profit, community organization dedicated to providing support and social opportunities for people with aphasia and their loved-ones.  She is a member of the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS) organization and an affiliate of AphasiaAccess, an alliance of life-participation practitioners. She is also a recipient of the American Speech-Language Hearing Associations ACE award for continuing education credit.

Debbie received her Bachelors degree from Wellesley College and her Masters degree from the University of South Florida.  She speaks fluent Italian and conversational French.
